five senses

A favorite writing prompt my students like is my five senses assignment. It is pretty simple, but I ask them to go out on their front step/porch and describe the scene using their five senses, then to finish with their thoughts or emotions. Even though it is simple, writing out the description first gets them connected to the moment, then the thoughts/emotion part is powerful because they can reflect on their life. I suggest they use a pen and paper (and most actually do) because the act of writing is more personal.
